cummins is its on company. nissan will have nothing to do with the truck.  except for putting there badges on it. i also heard that nissan will not be using the hemi. and that they will be using 4.7 v8 and the 3.6v6 in the titans. nissan will still use there 5.6 for the big v8 in there trucks.

Ive heard that they were goin to use a small V-6 Cat Diesel.. but that was just a rumor that my uncle told me, he works up at the Nissian plant in Canton, MS.

There is always rumors spreading, but most of the stuff gets shot down before its even a Prototype..

Guys,

There is a level of truth to much of what is said above. Nissan "was" in negoitations with Navistar regarding the Navistar "VT275", 4.5L V6 diesel that was at one point slated for the F-150 and is currently used in the Ford LCF and International CF, cabover class 5 trucks.

Where I am confident that you will see a Cummins / Nissan combination is in a class 4 & 5 (15,000 - 19,500 GVWR) truck that will be a rebadged Ram 4500 & 5500 as well as the Cummins ISB being made available in the UD (Nissan Diesel) class 6 & 7 commercial trucks.

You wont see a Titan with a Cummins, you will see a RAM "cab / chassis" with a Nissan Badge on the hood.

(Nissan has hired "ex Ford" commercial truck management to assist with this)

This is the same truck that is/was marketed as the Sterling Bullet, DTNA (Daimler Trucks North America) - (Freightliner) announced October 14 that the Sterling truck division will close its doors in March 09' and with that the Bullet will go away as well, thus opening the door for an Nissan / Chrysler partnership.

That is if Chrysler is not bought by Cherry Automotive (China), Tata (India) or Mahindra & Mahindra (India).

The sad part is that any of the above companies could buy "The big 3" (all of them if they wanted) putting an end to to these American corner stones.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up my understanding.

Cummins is developing a V8 for the 1500 class, and Nissan will be selling rebadged 1500 Dodges.  Sounds like it might have urea injection...

If I recall correctly didn't Sterling start as Ford's heavy line?  Anyway they ended up with Diamler, who also owns Freightliner, so continuing the Bullet wouldn't make much sense with the severing between Dodge and Diamler, and it seems to me that building heavier Sterlings would be kind of redundant with the same company running Freightliner...

Too bad, in that the Sterling grille was kind of cool, and I think they also came with aluminum wheels that the Dodge verson doesn't.

Thats correct, Freightliner bought the Ford heavy duty line (Class 8) in 1997 (I remember it all to well, this is how I make a living).

The Sterling product (Class 6,7 &8) directly overlaps much of the Freightliner product line.

Daimler still owns about 20% of Chrysler and the Bullet was in exchange for marketing rights to the Sprinter van.

As far as CAT is concerned, durallymax is correct with the possible exception of the C15. EPA 2010 emissions are tough and will require "SCR" to meet the 0.02 N0X requirement.

Dont be suprised if you see a CAT badged truck (Class 6, 7 & 8) in the future either but if or when we do they will probably be using a Navistar engine painted CAT yellow with the exception of the C15.
CAT and Navistar have been in negotiations for quite a while for both engine technology as well as contract truck manufacturing.

CAT is a vary strong company and is far more profitable building off road & marine engines then continuing to build a very limited number of on road engines. The engineering costs are huge to be able to play in a pretty small sand box.

Only time will tell!

**** are you talking about??? Tiers are just the different classifications such as Tier II as one road passenger vehicles and Tier III as off road vehicles.

Its the Bins within the Tiers that define the stringency on emissions. Bin 5 is coming in 2010 for on road diesels. So it will be Tier II Bin 5.  Currently I believe we are at Bin 7 but I could be wrong.

CAT wont be making on road diesels because it would cost them too much money to meet the emissions standards and on road diesels just dont make up a big enough percent of their profit.

However as stated above they have teemed up with navistart for on road stuff so dont be surprised if you still see a yellow motor.

As for making two trucks that are the same except for the badging, look at GM, they have the chevy and the gmc. Only difference is the lockwashers.hehe

Guys,

Its funny that we discussed this yesterday, just got an e-mail from one of my truck manufacturers regarding CAT engines. I cut and pasted the "guts" of the e-mail below.

All,

Cat has announced that they Will pull out of the truck engine business early.  The last day that we can order a Cat engine, of any EPA rating, will be January 16 2009.

The V8 cummins is suppose to be a 5.0l, There is a sticker on the 2009 rams showing what refrig to use in what engine it shows there being a 5.7 and a 5.0. I also read the press release that showed cat was discontinuing there over the road engines

Cat engine cannot meet the requirements for epa's.  There were rumors of cat building their own truck for on road stuff but that was a rumor that went around.  I am not quite caught up on it.  I know for a fact CAT will be making their own offroad truck here soon.  CAT makes enough money in everything they have their engines in.  From generators to pumping units for oil to big 3600 series we have it all.  I work for the PSD (Power Systems Division) at Holt Cat.  Our engines do have problems meeting with EPA standards but it's no big deal.  We have enough engine in everything else to make up for that little bit right there.  As far as CAT going into 1 tons it should not and probley for sure will not happen.  Toyota was talking a CAT diesel into their 1 ton truck they are going to put out but they ended up with something else which is not suprising.  I do not work in the truck shop so I do not have too much knowledge when it comes to the truck devision.  I would try to go visit them but we just moved to the new shop so visiting anybody anymore is not an option since we movd across town.
