Im gonna go get a new gun, I cant decide between the 308 or the 7 mag. Which one is better at all deer hunting situations, like long range and any other way. Whats your opinion?

they are both great hunting rounds.  i stepped up from a 308 to a 300 Win Mag this year and i love the magnum.  however the 308 just about cant be beat.  it is a very accurate round and has low recoil.

if you can afford it get a 270short mag that gun is awsome. i have a remington model 710 7mag(i couldn't afford the 270sm either) only paid like 300 for the gun came with a bushnell scope a box a bullets and a gun sling i love it. it brought home the pig in my avatar

Not sure this will help, but I use 270 mainly, if it is a long shot I use 7 mag.

I would go with the 308 less recoil and will kill anything the 7 mag will.

I'd choose a 270 over any gun to hunt deer.It may not be as big as a 7mm mag but its light and has a very high velocity.

I shoot long range target shooting.At 600 yards and in I choose my 308 over any gun,over 600 I either shoot my 7mag or my 7ultra mag.Granted all of my guns are custom built for me and all I shoot is handloads made for my guns I still choose the 308.I have killed several deer and hogs at over 300 yards with the 308.It still carries over 1000 lbs of energy at 500 yards,thats enough to kill any deer.

i shoot a remington model 700 long action, chambered in 270. it's a very accurate rifle,fairly light weight and dont have the recoil of a 7 mag or some of the larger caliber short magnums. i have done some work to mine so it shoots more acurrately than one out of the box. i have killed deer and coyotes out to and past 100 yards with no problem.

by the way you gonna get a ton of opinions on this subject

Between the 2 I choose .308 Less recoil great performance and alot of choices of ammo. If I had to reccommend a caliber it would be .270 and .243 for Texas deer. I see some guys that use 7mm mags and bigger for Texas deer. I mean cmon you dont need a huge caliber like that unless you either know you cant drop em clean with a neck shot or you hunt Mule deer or some other species of LARGE game elsewhere! I try my best to make all neck shots with deer,its quick, clean, and deadly. Plus it improves my patience waiting for the perfect shot. Always strive to be the best.

I know this was not one of your choices, but I shoot a Remington 7-08.  Been deer hunting with that gun for a while now with no complaints.  Sometimes it just boils down to personal preference.

IMO, a .270 is the best all around rifle for whitail and mule deer.  I shoot a Belgium Browning .270 but also have a couple Browning 7 mags and needless to say, they stay in the gun cabinet.  I've got several on the wall that I shot at well over 500 yards with the .270.  Except for at extremely long distances, the 7 mag does too much damage to a deer for my taste.  If you have decided to limit yourself to just a .308 or 7 mag, however, I say go with the .308.  And like what was said above, you're going to get opinions on this that range from very small calibers to very large.  It's mainly going to come down to what suits you best.

I'de choose a .270 over any 30 caliber rifle any day.     I just don't like them.

I do like the 7mm... but if I wasnt going to be shooting really long distances I'de probably go with the 7mm-08 or a 270.  I also like a .243... its an great shooting round and doesnt have a lot of recoil.

for shooting deer you don't need a lot of energy... unless you can't shoot

I shoot a remington sandero chambered in a 7mm ultra mag... I didnt buy it just for deer... I bought it with plans of one day taking some elk, moose, and other large game

I've have had both the 308 and 7mag, both are good choices.  I still have the 7mag and 30-06.  The 270 is also a very good choice.  It's kind of like ford vs chevy or cat vs brute vs can am, etc..  A lot of the guys here that are into longgggg distance shooting have gone to the 300 WSM and swear by them.

The 7mm Rem mag bolt action is the best rifle overall! I have used mine for 5 years now and I have had no complaints at all!  Very good gun!

I have several rifles. If you do a lot of hunting from tree stands a short action round like the 7-08 or 308 would be a good choice for a over the counter rifle because they weigh less and are more compact. I am comfortable with my 7-08 out to 200 yds. The 7mm mag. I am comfortable with it to around 400. The longer the rifle the more forgiving it is when shooting longer distances. I bought a Remington model XTR recently in the 30-06 caliber. Looking forward to topping it with a good scope and hunting with it this year.
Everyone has opinions and most are gonna favor what they have. My favorite depends on the conditions I'm hunting.

I have a ruger 243 and a win model 100, 308 cal.  I have owned a win 270 and a win 300mag.  I would go with the 308 because of the recoil and its just a good all around caliber.  To each his own though.

The .308 will do anything you want.It is one of the most accurate rounds out there.There is a reason why it is still the most popular Sniper round used by U.S. Forces.Get you a Remington 700,or Winchester Model 70,put a good scope on it and have at it.

depends on if you want a short action or long action, also most 7mags are gonna also have about 2 inches more of barrel, not alot but if you are in a small blind it can make manuverabilty harder. 7 mag kicks considerably harder. and is going to ruin more meat than the .308, more gun is not always better, shot placement is whats important, as far as accuracy almost all police agencies use .308 as a sniper rifle, but I believe that for all intents and purposes of a hunting rifle they are all about as accurate as needed.

I personally prefer lighter non magnum guns, but I dont make many long shots and dont need to also hunt any game other than whitetail with it.  my favorite hunting rifle is and old savage 110 in .243, have never lost a deer with this rifle, it all about shot placement. Bigger is not always better, id take the .308 personally but its all about personal preference, if your gonna take this gun on some elk hunts then I might go with the 7 mag

I've killed more deer with a 6mm{little hotter than a .243,but not by much} shooting 95 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip handloads than all my other rifles combined.Like OREAR said,it's not all about what you shoot as much as it is the shot you make..243 or.300 mag,it doesn't matter if you make a crappy shot.

I've got a 7mag and .308. I like the 7mag for long highline shots and the .308 for everything else.

I recently bought a remington 700 tactical .308.
*$560
* accurate (.5 inch)
* short bull barrell (easy to get in and out of deer stands and walking through woods)
* Hogue overmolded stock (quiet when it bumps against something)
* .308 ammo is cheap
