This is going to be long but I wanted to get this out there for anyone who has not been and are planning on going to Coal Creek/Windrock. We went for our last trip 10-17- 10-18. First of all, the people at the Snack Shack are rude, they act like they can't speak to you. We were trying to go to the Northsie to ride 10-17-08. The trails that we took on the Southside that day were marked pretty good. After we crossed 116 they were not marked worth a crap. There are 2 that I can't remember the numbers, that needed to be closed. One went straight up and was rocky as crap. We didn't even attempt that one. Then there was one that my husband could have been killed on. He flipped his ATV and was thrown down a bank. Thank God he is okay but what were we suppose to do if we needed an EMT? None of us had a signal on our phones. We were trying to get to the "flats" that everybody has made so much hype about and when we made it is was disappointing. We got lost coming back due to the trails not being marked and matching the map. I don't know why so many people continue to go there. On 10-18-08 we were going to go over to where "PETRO" is on the map only to find out that the gate was locked and the area past there was residential. It was not a fun trip like we were counting on. There are 3 of us in our family and we paid the $99 to ride for 2 days and had zero fun. This was our last trip here. It is NO FUN when you are lost because of the lack of marked trails and having a map to match the trails that are out there. And when it is getting dark and you are freezing. I know I will get bashed because of this but I don't care. There were even people that we ran into that complained because of all of this. So don't think I am the only one. I just want the newbies who are thinking about planning a trip to Coal Creek to make sure this is where you want to go.

Its a nice place if you know where to ride and where the good trails are. But you are exactly right.....The trails are not marked over there at all and the map is BS, well the map works good on the southside just not the north. Plus they have cut so many new gravel roads though that place that you dont know which one to take to get back to camp. I've been riding there for about 5/6 years atleast one or two times a year and we still  get lost from time to time, but we know the general direction we need to be going to get back. We know how to get to the good trails now so its alot more fun... like trail 57 (north side)...thats a blast. 22,24,16,12 (south side) are fun trails too!

If you change your mind about going back, take someone with you that knows that area, the trails and how to get to them and such.  And throw that map away. Its junk! Also if your going to venture off to the carrieville flats take a GPS (to help find your way back cause the trails arent marked) extra gas, a lunch, and a jacket. Your cell phone will work on the flats! I cant beleve you didnt like the view, you can look over the whole city from up there.

Coal Creek in not much anymore IMO....I have ridden there for years. There is alot of ROUGH Trails. If your inexperianced you need not to be alone. Yes...the maps stink...trails are alot of gravel now. You should have went to Brimstone or Pickett. Pickett is Free but no Map...you have to have a guide there. If you need one let me know. Most of the trails in East TN are rough & rocky especially Brimstone & Windrock. Your not the first one with this experiance. I understand fully how you feel. The Map is useless, you need a guide there. Sorry about your Bad experiance. If your experianced in Rough, steep, and rocky trails Brimstone is the place to go. BTW the flats aren't nothing much...waste of time IMO.

I am glad to hear that we are not the only ones out there who think this about the place. We don't like all the rocky and rough trails, that is why we have decided not to go back there. Does the place in Kentucky have a website? How about Pickett?

Coal Creek was fantastic five to six years ago before the gravel superhighways took over.  We went over to the flats one time and I agree with you.  Long long rough ride for nothing.  It was okay but not what I was expecting.

CC is very rough and rocky so don't go there expecting nice groomed trails unless you stay on the gravel roads.

Sorry you had trouble with the snack shack folks.  They have always been great to me.  Guess everyone has bad days here and there.   We always enjoyed the free camping at the trail head.  That is no longer allowed.  From here on out I am going to Royal Blue.  It's an hour farther but is not so rocky everywhere.

Snack shack folks always been nice to me too.  What were yall expecting to find at the flats? A mall, strip club or something? Maybe a big funny looking guy in a clown suit with a sign that says "you made it"...LOL  The point of riding to the flats is to ride a all day ride. Its just a destination, its about the ride not whats at the end of it. Actually if you go the right way you can ride from the flats into a town....eat at shoneys, get a room, get gas and then ride back to camp (at your own risk).

I am just saying what we experienced while we were there.
Funny, we were not expecting anything like that at all, but we have seen better sites at Hatfield-McCoy.
Yeah, people have told us you could ride into town like that but NOBODY wants to tell you how to get there. For some reason, people think stuff like that is a big secret that can't be shared. But we are not worried about it because that was the last of our money they are getting.

In Tennessee most all trails are ROUGH , ROCKY & STEEP. That just how it is in the Mountians up here. Still alot of Mud & Creeks though.

We went this past June and had a great time.  However, do not stay at Windrock Campground (not to be confused with the new Windrock ATV campground).  Talk about rude!  Not only rude, but CRAZY!

Other than that, we had a great time.
