What are/were you guys using??  This is going to be strictly a pit bike and will never be trail ridden at all.  It needs to give the absolute best possible launch, while retaining the best possible topspeed in low range...The topspeed of low is an advantage that I can't afford to lose, since essentially it was a major reason for getting an older Sportsman over the newer models...

I'm aware of what alot of the guys are doing on the new Polaris's, but have forgotten alot of the info I once knew on the "old" style clutch setup...Any help is appreciated.

Call Hotseat and tell Jeremy that your running the purple spring and what size tire your running and he will send you what you need!

I'll talk to Speedwerx today...

You guys are going to trip out when you first see this bike...

Well, here is how it started anyway...Needless to say, we got a good deal!

And how it looked yesterday...

Once it's clutched and on tires/wheels, we're looking at about $2400 total invested for a fully functional 01HO...

Taking advise from someone that more then likely doesn't know the difference between a screw driver and a wrench may not be your best bet either.

I wouldn't touch HotSeat/Speedwerks with a ten foot pole anymore.

They used to be the best in the business but not any more.

Steve and his group need to step back and do some serious regrouping.

My clutch is awesome. Granted mines not a 500, but the clutch is set up.

As you know, most clutching in racing ATV's is top secret. I will tell you that mine is made up from parts from:

  1. Polaris.
  2. HotSeat
  3. EPI
  4. TEAM
  5. Custom parts I can't mention.

In my years playing with these clutches, I have also used many things from all the kit makers. Alot of this stuff is just sitting and collecting dust now.   I think all my Hotseat stuff is in the bottom of a coffee can somewere.

As far as cam arms/weights, well until now I have relied one one particular brand of weight.   That is changing now though.  As far as springs and Helixes. Well I have also played with many different brands including alot of polarises own helixes.

I will note that the company that actually manufacturers the polaris clutches is now seriously getting into the performance aspect.

They are working on some clutching products right now for a certain aftermarket company.

Lets just say that they are one heck of a "Team".

I already checked out all of their products...

just not much on ordering a "kit" when I don't know what the kit consists of spring/weightwise and how it will be for exactly what I wish to accomplish...

I'd rather order springs and "adjustable" weights separately, if you get where I'm going with that...

Perhaps turn up the stall about 500rpms with a stiffer primary, get a slightly slower(stiffer) shiftout from the secondary, and "set" the weights to match the peak powerband on the 500H0s(about 5k IMO)...

I'm also running a combination of Stock, Heelclicker and EPI components in my 06' 500 carb. After running several different setups, I am finally happy with my current clutching. With the 28 Sbacks it will wheelie with ease in Lo and I haven't hit the rev limiter yet. It will even pull them up about 6" in Hi Range. I'll make a vid in a few minutes of how it performs and then post it. If you're then interested in the setup, send me a pm and i'll give you the info. As of right now, this is the best comparison video I have of my '05 carb with my setup vs an '07 carb with the HL/EPI Extreme kit. Both bikes were running virtually the same tires.

Here is a vid of me on my old Polaris with no motor or clutch mods, pulling 30x11 Mudzillas on all fours like it was nothing.  DK, you know a little bit about this bike.

If that's DK's old bike, it's a 700. Mine's a 500.

First off, it's MY old bike.  Secondly, I'm not really concerned if yours is a 500 a 700 or a 800.  I wasn't trying to compare my bike to yours, I just wanted to show that a stock clutch can still pull pretty hard.

Yep...gotta know more about that clutching of yours Cale!

What year did they change the transmission gearing on the 500s?  I know it's ALOT lower now than it was then but not real sure what year they changed it.  Your bike definately leaves VERY hard...

Ideally, I can get the clutching right to keep me in the "ho" powerband where it is strong, and then play with gearing in the tranny to get it perfect.  I know the high/reverse shifterfork in this bike is SENT, so whenever I decide to actually tear it down and fix it, I'm probably going to put a gearset for high that is within ~15% of low...

Hopefully it works out how I have in my head GWC...You know how that goes though...

I'll pm you with my setup if you want to try it. Although I think an upgrade to the new style primary and secondary clutch will have to be done to run the components/setup I have. I think the gearing changed when the body style last changed in '05, because my bike is an '05 and it is lower geared than my buddy's '01. For racing purposes, his (and your's) are probably geared better. Stock, mine topped out at 58 mph on flat pavement. His would reach about 62 mph. But, mine feels like it is stronger out of the hole and will reach top speed quicker. But, his feels a little stronger in the mid range. I think with your factory gearing, tire size will be essential to getting the most potential out of your gearing/clutching. For pit racing, mine feels faster and pulls better with 28's - 29.5's. Yours would probably fair better with 27's to help keep it in the meat of the power. Also, a common problem with any Polaris is that they leak around the seal behind the primary on the cvt backing plate. A small bead of silicon under the lip of the seal will solve that problem. Also, the front hubs are prone to leaking fluid and require a lot more maintenence vs the central hilliard design. A conversion to the new style hilliard would be a big improvement IMHO. You would need the diff, electrical connections, prop shaft, axles and possibly the hubs. Good luck with it and let me know if I can help you in anyway.

06Grizzwald, i'm chilled.  Maybe I did take your remarks too seriously. Either way, no harm done. I'm on good terms if you are.

It's Cool.  I'm trying to make one of the upcoming races with Dakotah to see what it's all about, possibly Mudstock.  If I do, maybe I'll get a chance to meet you, and we can have a cold one.
