Ive already installed the new housings/gears. They are from a 400 Eiger, and I've read about having to knock out the bushings of the stock parts, and install them into the new parts. The thing is, when I got the new parts in, they were identical in terms of complete with bushings as my stock parts. The gears slid on with no problems, and from what I can tell (got late and cold on me) just driving it forward, and reverse, everything is fine.

So did I miss something here? What was the reasoning for knocking out the brass bushings? Di they not use to come with them already installed?

Thanks

Where did you get them from?  The shaft for the starter clutch on the 500 is smaller than the shaft on the 400. You may have gotten 500 parts....  The clutch basket from a 400 should fit right on with out any modifications.  The starter clutch is where you have to swap the bushings.

Its 400 suk parts for sure.  the starter clutch is a 28 tooth I think is what I counted, and the one in my hand now is a 31...Everything fit on... This was done to my 03 500 cat

Holly Shahizzillemynizzle! Just took it out a ran it. WOW Feels like the tires are smaller than stock. Great low range, and the high range feels like the low did prior to the swap out.

Jake and Bruno, thanks for discovering this mod!

i don't know if you can tell in this pic, but the bushing on the LEFT is the thin bushing, and the bushing installed is the thick one.

you should not have been able to just swap them out.  the OEM eiger (400m) starter clutch gear would have a good amount of play in it with the wrong bushing.

Exactly, the shaft on the 500 motor is smaller so you need the thicker bushing.  Something doesn't sound right....

Seems like I remember reading that the older 500m's already had the reduction gears in them..

I found it. Heres the link..

what color is your motor? 2003 was somewhat of a transition year, you may have an older style crankshaft. i
