sputtering engine, check engine light, thrown codes I think?

Cut them bad boys off.  (get o2 simulators if needed)

theres not a certain mileage which they may become clogged, but I say if you have 150K miles and still runing the stock ones, at least upgrade to some Magnaflow high flows.

If the truck is 96 or newer the code is still in the computer in history, any decent scan tool will be able to get it out and let you know where to start looking. Also you didn't say what kind of truck, some trucks have normal problems that you watch out for might not be a cat at all. Most always on a clogged cat the engine won't necessarily sputter or miss but it will just be low on power and or bog down real bad. At any rate I'd suggest getting the code out of the computer before guessing at it and wasting money on a cat you might not need.

It's a 1999 blazer, no codes came up on three different readers. I got to take the O2 sensor out sometime to do a quick check just its been to cold. Then if its not that I am going to mess around with the throttle body, then I guess air filter. Plugs, wires, rotor, cap are all new within 1000 miles.

Usually you can tell if you have a clogged cat by checking your PCM/ECU to see if there is any DTCs. Most of the time it'll set a check engine light. Most of the time its a Cat Converter Efficienty code. Also you can hit the cat with like a rubber mallet to see if it's toast or not. What causes your cat to fail is when your engine is running really rich. All the toxic fumes coming out of the engine. So if you have had engine problems you may want to check your cat.

When the check engine light came on a while back it said the front two cylinders were running rich. But today it didn't seem as bad, this thing is worse then a female.

They had some probs with Distributors and Dist caps with those and also if it is running rich then check the fuel psi regulator. The psi reg is inside the intake plenum and are know to leak fuel right into the intake manifold.

run a clogged cat too long and you will start burning up exhaust valves

In my experience, a clogged cat will often cause a loss of power, especially at higher RPM and high throttle...

I'd maybe double check the plug wires are correct, and take a look at the plugs (make sure none are oil fouled), and if you decide it's the cat, you might tack in a pipe temporarily and see if that improves how it runs- to verify the cat is clogged before you spend $$$ on a new cat...

Another symptom of a clogged cat is a smell that somewhat resembles rotten eggs and a really rich fuel smell.  You can also check under the truck after it has been driven a little while and see if the cat is getting very hot. I have seen many get clogged and those things will litterly glow from the heat.

yep, I saw this on my moms old 88 Regal a long time ago.  it was spitting and sputtering and I looked under it and saw something that was orange, literally roasting.  I was about 7 at the time so I thought it was cool.

Catalyletic converters seem to be more trouble than their worth.  a few months back they were worth some serious $$ too.

Cat problems seemed to be very frequent back in the carb and early fuel injection era...

If its a newer truck take it to the dealer. Alot of them have to replace it by federal law, it falls under a mandatory 100,000 mile emissions warranty.

The Federal Emissions Warranty is 8yrs/80k miles, whichever comes first. Hes out by time at very least with it being a 99.

You positive?  i was pretty sure it was unlimited years 100,000 mile.  This is what several dealerships told me when i was looking at trucks a couple of months ago.  I guess they could all be wrong though, got a link to the actual law?

Either way with a 180 000 and it being almost 10 years old I'm out of the question.

I'm not advising that anyone tries this, but on a typical truck with a singe cat, there a two o2's (one before and one after). the first does all the work, the second checks for a difference between the two as it passes the cat. If you hollowed the cat and removed the second 02 and lets say, zip tied it to the frame up high and plugged the exhaust where the o2 was, it would think everything is ok and show no engine light. I know this will work on some trucks. I have even passed inspection and emission testing with this set up.

I take it your a cop then? Just wondering if their is any kind of ticket that could be giving with just running a cat with no muffler?

Its different in all states. In my state, you could get a ticket for "loud and objectionable noise" if you put anything louder than stock. Its not a law thats enforced very often, unless you piss someone off. Who doesn't replace there exhaust with a louder one.

Absolutely 150%, I'm a tech at a Chevy dealer. Dealt with that warranty plenty of times now.

That was the same thing I was thinking, and around Florida their is millions of V-8s running just headers so I sound stalk compared to them
