Okay, I'm no stranger to tires, snorkels, lifts, etc...  But a discussion between some of my friends and some of the things they had to say about snorkels really confused me.  I don't doubt myself, but if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

It was in their opinion that any ATV which is CVT and water cooled (radiator) is going to need 3 snorkels...
1. airbox         2. belt               3. engine air intake(?)

I was under the impression that the three snorkels were
1. airbox         2. belt intake      3. belt out

I've never heard of a direct engine air intake, other than through the carb boot intake.  I'm kind of confused, as all the liquid cooled ATV's I've had seem to not have this intake.  For discussion sake, the ATV's in question are 1997 and up 500 PoPo Sportsmans and the newer automatic Yamaha Kodiaks (400's and 450's).

Am I wrong, are they wrong?  Is it somewhere in between?  This seems like something I need to know, as I've snorkeled some Rubicons before, and only did the airbox, nothing else, and had no problems whatsoever.  I don't want to screw up a fourwheeler because I did a bad snorkel.

Thanks,
Josh

personally i think ur right but i have not worked on a belt bike yet, but i was under the impression that there is the intakes for the airbox and belt housing...that makes 2 snorkels then u have an exhaust for the belt housing which makes ur 3rd one

1. Carb Intake    2. CVT Intake     3. CVT Exhaust

And if you have a carburetor....atmospheric vent....

Your buddies are wrong.

  1. Carb intake.
  2. Belt intake.
  3. Belt exhaust.

You also need to "snorkle" the,
  1. Front and rear gearcases.
  2. Transmission.
  3. Carb vent.
  4. Carb bowl overflow.
  5. Radiator overflow bottle (if the bottle has not been relocated).

These last 5 are just small hoses that can be ran to the pod.

Yeah, all the ventilines I knew about, that wasn't the discussion really.  I was pretty sure I was right.  they personally don't have much experience with it, and I have a good bit, so I figured it was just a misunderstanding.  I was curious though, as I am fully capably of being wrong.

I dont know where they were getting the idea of an engine intake from, didn't really make sense to me.  I'll be sure to fill them in on it.

thanks.

everybike has a crankcase vent. It just sounds like they were the ones confused.

they prolly thought the one of the belt intakes   was the engine intake cause if im not mistakin on the 500 the intake or the exaust on the cvt not sure which one but it goes in from the backside of the belt cover which kinda looks likes it goes into the case instead of like most bikes with the intake on one end of the belt cover and the exaust on the other end

Thats exactly what it was.   I tried to tell them, but they kept insisting so much that it made me doubt myself.  I don't know why I didn't bring up the fact that my Rubicon was only snorkeled from the airbox and I never had probelms out of it.

Hey J_Fred you're correct my friend!  The air intake goes into the air box, which is usually mounted low(in the danger zone) & will take on water! The stock intake, usually a tube of some sort, is removed & the remaining hole is covered/enlarged & snorkle/s run up from there! Along with the belt intake & belt exhaust that's 3!! Tell your boys they're Wrong !!!  Now go rub it in! LOL! Later                  Brandon
