I had already searched this topic but I still do not have a solution. We rode yesterday in deep water most of the day and 4 out of 7 CanAms would throw at random a Check engine limp home mode. On top of that the 3 times my bike did it, the fan came on when it threw the code. Once I would get out the water and cycle the key once off and back on the limp home was gone. I have already went through and checked, dielectric greased all the connections. None of the connections were even remotely wet or corroded. Any more ideas on this? Our dealer (Comp. Sports) has no idea why they are doing it. Thanks for any input.

yeah what he ^^^^^^ said. behind the right side sitting on bike plate that says 800 high output there are 2 under there that will do this if not greased.

Yep, hit them both! It's weird that the fan comes on at the same time. Knowing the engine is not hot in the water.

check the battery cables and make sure there tight. loose cables can wreak havoc on the can ams.

Battery cables are tight. I have researched this issue to no avail. I am surprised this isn't as big of an issue with all the deep water riders on here. Please keep the ideas coming!

sounds like you need to check the fan relay? did you dielectric grease all your fuses and relays?

Fan relay is in the fuse box right? That has a triple seal on it and is dry as a bone. I put a little dielectric grease on the connections anyway. Really didn't see a reason for it. We are up on a water wheelie with the front of the bike out of the water so it has to be something like mid ship. The rear rack goes under pretty often, it seems like it is happening when the seat goes under to the airbox. I specifically checked the temp sensor on the rear cylinder and it was clean and dry. It had grease on it from the factory. This bike has much better connections(sealed) than my brute. I can't figure it out. Gotro's bike was doing it at exactly the same time as mine friday night and sunday. Same holes following each other.

Mine has done the same things before. When I got really deep in water the engine light would flash red and sometimes the fan would come on. I never figured out why or could get anyone to tell me why and I have hit everything I know of with dielectric grease.

those are not the connections he's talking about. i said the same thing if you saw two then you still missed one. pull the plastic that's not marked and you'll see one back there. i had to go back and redo mine and now it's solid.

I hit the one under the black plastic in the "V" of the engine as you mentioned already. What I don't understand about the dielectric grease theory is these connections are either double or triple sealed already. Most already have grease on them. I have yet to find a plug on this canam with a "bad" connection. Everything is sealed well.

did you check the solenoid connections ?

Is that the solenoid at the rear of the bike next to the battery. Behind the plastic piece?

Yeah, everything is tight and clean on the solenoid. The two smaller male connectors are already full of grease on it. I don't know. I guess it's good that this minor issue is all that is wrong with the bike. Oh and my rear gear box seal is leaking but I wouldn't think that would be hard to change. Loosen 13mm bolt at gear box side of shaft, loosen rear diff, slide diff back which will let the driveshaft come out of the gear box. Pop out old seal and install new. Right?

Took the bike to Comp. Sports to have the maint. soon display cleared. While I there I asked Keith to check and see if the computer stored any codes. I was there the week before to swap out a fan. He cleared any codes then. My limp home mode deal came on 5 times this past weekend. When Keith hooked up the bike the computer showed 5 codes that the temp sending unit was malfuntioning. That may explain the fan coming on while the bike was not hot. He changed the sending unit so I will keep everyone posted if it happens again. Hopefully it solved the issue. Riding Tuesday so we will see.

Hi everyone, brand new here on the forum and I really like what I see. I found you doing a Google search on " Check Engine Limp Home".
You guessed it, I've had my New Can Am 2008 650Ho since May and I stopped counting the times I keep seeing the yellow engine flashing and the message telling me to limp home.
The first time it happened I was like 50 miles from civilization and believe me if I tell ya I was sweating bullets.

I took it in for it's routine maintenance and check up and the BRP mecanic told me it was frequent on all Can Am's to display this message. He reset it in the shop and found no codes.

The minute I hit the road it came on again....

This morning we had a ton of snow here in Quebec and as I was plowing the driveway the darn engine lite came on again and the Check Engine Limp home message came on again....

They recently had a recall for the black rubber reset button on top of the speedometer which they changed free but I think they should also have a recall for this problem so that it stops annoying us Can Am owners.

Thanks for the insight on the Temp sensor . Please let us know how you make out on your next outing. Maybe your mecanic is on to something here and we may benefit from it.

Thanks

Keeping my fingers crossed, but I rode yesterday in DEEP water all day. My bike didn't throw the code but Gotro's did twice. Only difference is my temp sensor was changed. Could have been coincedence but we will see.

Thanks for the info, Let's hope you solved the problem.
BTW I checked my battery connections and they are all tight and also my Radiator is clean as a whistle.

Let's keep our fingers crossed.  Do you happen to know how much a Temp sensor costs for a Can Am ?  Just out of curiosity.
Thanks

Yes, we both have the 3 year warranty.  I would like to make sure it wasn't just a fluke, so we are going to run mine for a while and see what happens. I will keep ya'll posted.

btw, I spent the day riding trails in the woods in 2 feet of snow, mud and water holes. Saw 2 Moose (female) and that darn Engine light never came on once...It's enough to drive you nuts.

Came back home in darkness and installed the plow and did about 2 hours work with it. Apart from getting a "Low Batt" message (???) ( probably because I was using the Winch to lift and lower the plow often),,, and the engine cooling fan coming on at 26F, the Limp home check engine never came one a single time   Sheeesh !

i was just fixing to say the temperature sending unit.  It happened on my 06 about a year and a half ago.  Water pump had already went.  Radiator had already been changed along with the fan.  Thermostat had been changed.  I asked the question about the sensor... They changed it and whallllaaaa! It magically fixed! ha ha.  Crazy how something so simple can be such a big problem.  Glad that got it fixed for ya.  Competition sports is tha %*#@!!
