Ok, for some of you that ride serious mud/water, I have a question for you.  How long does a set of pads last?  I'd love to have the following information if you can provide it:
How long does a set of pads last?  approx hours of riding time would be great.
what type of pads are you using?
Size of tires?
machine you're riding?

well i have 1800 miles on my factory pads and i could do another 1000 miles on them

but bigger tire would wear them down faster i would think

i replaced my other 4wheeler pads with ebc sever duty and like them

im running 25/8/12 front and 25/10/12s on the rear

I don't have a problem with pads, I'm looking for information because some people at work asked me about it, so I am asking people who have more experience.

I make my pads from the woven brass from McMaster,,,,, put a fresh set on a couple weeks back and went and rode hardcore trails, mud and water for 10 straight hours. Checked the pads the next day to see how they held up. Looked to be less than 10% wore. And they only cost about $4 for a full front set to make. Even if they didn't hold up as good as they do, the cost factor makes them viable,,,,

Big T everyone gets different mileage out of pads even if there the same type. I am on my third set with 965 miles on my grizz. My first set was gone in just a shade over a 100 miles because of the sand I road in the first weekend I ever owned it.

I was just mentioning brass because I thought you were tired of buying high dollar pads.

I know everyone will get different mileage out of their pads, but I'm looking to see what those mileages are.

Bigger tires and a lot of MUDD will kill factory pads.
I'm replacing mine with 150 mile's on the bike.

And that's why I started making my own,,,, $50-60/front set was really crimping my pocket book,,,, and even after I found some on line for $25/front set it still ate up a lot of chump change. I saw the thread on here about making your own and went for it. Ordered some material and started experimenting,,,,, first sets weren't all that good,,, but the woven brass sets made a believer out of me.

McMaster to get the material. Grinding wheel to clean the backing plates and scuff them real good. JB Weld. Vise to clamp and hold for 24 hours.

I guess I could take some pics and post them the next time I make some sets. May be this weekend,,,,

go to mcmaster.com and look on bottom right side of page at Raw Material. Click and go to Brake & Clutch Lining  page,,, scroll down to semi-metallic strips,,,, (woven brass),,,, Pick the right size for your use and order it. I use the 3/16 x 1",,, $3.15/lf and I can get 1 1/2 full sets per foot out of it. Use you original backing plate to mark your cut lines and use metal tin snips to cut to rough size. Clean the backing plates good on a bench grinder and make sure the surface is roughed up. Mix up your JB Weld (Standard set stuff,,, not quick set). Apply a thin coat to both backing plate and the pad material. Get all 4 pads glued together with the plates and use a nail or skinny rod to line them up thru the keeper hole in each plate. Set the bunch of them in a vise and crank it down once they are all lined up and even. Leave for 24 hours,,,, remove from vise and use bench grinder to dress up the edges. Install in your calipers,,,, Like I said,,, less than $4 for the whole front,,,,

I'll try and post some pics early next week.

Okay,,, built a set saturday. Takes longer to clean the backing plates than anything else,,, but they have to be clean and roughed up.

This is the stock material I'm using now,,,, was using some other woven brass that was a different color but McMasterCarr told me it was the same material except in a different color. Measure and layout the sizes as required. I cut it with heavy metal shears.

I use a small screwdriver to hold them in line as I set them into the vise. And crank them down tight.

Use the bench grinder to trim and clean the edges and you're ready to install them.

Like i said,,,, they wear well for me,,, but even if they only gave me one ride, for the cost difference it's well worth it to me. Especially if you have to do brakes on more than one atv,,,, gets a bit pricey at $25-$60 for front pads.

that's pretty slick gordo, glad to see thinking out of the box.  i have had good luck with the ebc sintered metal pads, the stockers only lasted about 4 rides.

That's why I started making my own,,,, paying full pop for stock pads that don't last,,,, got quite expensive,,,, I can make a set (4 pads) for less than $3.00,,,, and they last real well,,,, my wife's bike got a new set before Marengo,,,, and we ride every weekend thru mud, water and sand,,,,, and her brakes still have over 70% pad left,,,, I like them. And the best part is, my brother in law found the plant over in Magnolia where they produce the material (green woven brass) that I was buying from McMaster Carr,,,, and they gave him a PILE of scrap end cuts,,,, enough maerial to keep all of our bikes in brake pads for years,,,, all I got to buy now is the JB Weld,,,,
