It's vibration proof that way, not wrench proof.  Twist it like you mean it, it'll come off.  Odds are, when re-torqued to spec, it'll come up to just a shade different location and can be re-staked.  If there's a couple of stakes in a row so you get a big, weak, torn up spot, it's time for a new nut.  You're not supposed to reuse that type of nut.  You should have a new one and not worry about what happens to the stake.  But only the staking ring is compromised, the threads are just fine so long as they're not over or under tightened.  I torque them down and see what I've got to work with before I get new ones.  If the lock ring lines up to a new spot, (they usually do at least once) then you're golden.  Even if you could "unstake" the ring prior to removal, they crack and don't "restake" anyhow so nothing's lost by tearing out that one little spot..

What jake said.  And if you can't get it off with an impact gun, take a cutting torch and cut that tab, making sure not to cut into the threads on the end of the cv shaft.  That's what I had to do and I was using an 1100 lb 3/4" MAC impact gun.  That sucker didn't want to come off.

Mine was stuck like chuck.  The impact is fine.  The thing's only a few months old.  And it better not be crappin out as much as I paid for it.  My compressor stays at about 130.  I even had to put heat to the nut after I cut the tab out.  Maybe the smart guys at yammer hammer cross threaded the thing or something.  I need a bigger compressor anyways.  I think you just gave me a reason to upgrade.

It's on 1/2" hose on my craftsman compressor.  We have a smaller kobalt compressor with the 3/8" hose for the die grinders and air ratchet and other stuff.

just use a really big 4-way bar or a breaker bar with a pipe on it. what we did to reuse the nut is tighten it up to specs, then drill a hole through the axle and nut then put in a cotterpin. we did this after we replaced the wheel bearing so it didnt go again.
