Hello guys. I just bought a set of Highlifter wheels for my new '06 Kodiak and I was checking out the site when saw this forum. I love my Kodi, but I really love my old Kodiak! I have been beating on this thing for the last decade, and it just won't die. It has been a great machine with very little trouble and I was wonding if any of you guys still had any around. Most of the guys I ride with have upgraded to big bore quads, and although they are awesome, I have to call before we ride to see who's bike is actually in running condition before we go. The old tank is always out in the shop waiting for me to ride it.

I have a 94 and she is one bad mudder. I have never seen one as moded as mine. most of my mods are custom and she is bad in the mud. that is all she is set up for with the locker and all. and who says you need a big bore. I am looking at a **** stroker for it. that baby would be even badder. but anyone who wants a piece of this little thing can come on it can hang with those big bores in the mud. here are some pics before I left to go oride last weekend. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/cotto35749/detail?.dir=87f7&.dnm=bd41re2.jpg

That is a bad NO CREATIVE SPELLING little Kodiak Mud Man. How much of an improvement could you tell will the jet and pipe? I have been thinking about that a long time. The guys I ride with pick at me because it's old, but a lot of times we get to nasty looking hole on new trail and they start looking at me because they know I'll try it.

I put a K&N on it and the jet kit and noticed a little, it would pull 26 laws fine. And then i bought a HMF for a 2000 koodiak and had to do some modifying on the pipe to get it to work but I noticed tremendous amout of pep it gave it. I went from just being able to turn the laws to being able too spin them off the line. I then bored it 1mm over and that was the bigest improvent I felt until it started smoking because the people at the shop bred my cyinder to big. but I could pull the front end up with the laws on it in 2nd gear with the biger bore. but I am sincd then went back too stock bore because my other cylinder was ruined when it was bored too large. but a HMF will defently give you more power. and a snorkle and jetting too.

Thanks for the response. I just got back from a ride tonight (almost 2:00 AM now). There was about 20 of us including my 2 Kodiaks. We have access to about 6 miles of various trails, creeks, and swamps. I always ride the old Kodiak down there because of the better tires, snorkel, and the fact that I'm kinda attached to it. The new Kodiak gets ridden by my wife on fairly easy trails and shallow parts of the creek. I would just like a the power to get back what I had before I put the 27's on it.

oh mine with the HMF, K&N, Snorkle, and jet kit I dont think that it would have any problem turning 28s but I just havent gotten them because I already have 26s and I have the rear swing arm lifted as much as it will go and the tires now almost rub the foot pegs. and i dont want to just them off and re doo them rigth now. if I decide to get that **** stroker I will probly do something and put 28s on it.

Just out of curiousity, were you at Dirty Dog this weekend? I wasn't able to make it, but my brother went, and he was describing a old Kodiak that sounded just like your's last night. He said there were a lot of guys from Bamaboggers down there. We are located in Valley, AL about 15 miles from Aub*rn (I know this a moderated board, and cuss words aren't allowed)

He was telling me that I should mount some round headlights under the rack, because he said he saw one at Mud that looked good. He said it looked just like mine except the lights and it had wheels and Outlaws. I noticed your sig said Huntsville, so I thought it might be you. Small world I guess?? Is the 386cc engine on these the same as the current Big Bears? I didn't realize that the Big Bears didn't go to 401cc water cooled engine like on the newer Kodiaks until today.

yea I put those lights under the rack because it kinda makes it look like the new yamaha body style, and the stock lights suck. i am not totally sure abtou the big bear motors. I know that the kodiak and the big bear are both 386cc. but the kodiak has the dual range tranny. everyone says that nothing is the same but I am pretty sure that alot of the motor is the same. becasue why would they make two different motors that are the same size.

not much if anything is the same, but both have good performance and reliability. the main difference is the newer 401 is liquid cooled doo the jug and head are different and they are automatic so the bottom end is different.

I've got a 95 kodiak and I have had a chance to get my grandfather's 02 polaris 700 and sell mine if I wanted but I could not part with kodiak. when I first got it it had 26" gators on it and that was it. After we got the popo 700 it had 27-12-12 tri-claws on it. I soon traded my grandfather and then turn to highlifhter for a lift and a performance kit. K@n air filter, ngk plug outer wear, jet kit, and a supertrapp exhaust. The difference is like night and day. I was at  Dirty Dog. I came in second place in the 0-500cc class and fourth over all. You can keep all those new bikes just give me my KODIAK and a full tank of gas any day.

we are talking abotu the similarities between the old kodiak 400 and the big bear 400 motors. raino I saw you there at the bog. I got put out the first round because the guy with the big bear in 29.5s got off and pushed his bike. But I love my kodiak I only payed $500 for and I wouldnt sell it for $5000. I just need to get my jetting right and I will be set.

The top end is the same, but the bottom is different with the low range thrown in on the kodiaks.

When you say the bottom end is different, do you mean just the bottom casting of the block/tranny, or are the crank/rod/piston different as well? Also, does anyone know the HP/TQ figures on these engines. Thanks again!

the stroke is the same so the rod and the crank should be the same. I wonder if the piston is interchangable? and I wonder if the big bear cam will work in the kodiak? cause neither webcams nor hotcams makes a cam for the kodiak. I also know that the 350 warrior has the same size piston but a shorter rod. I am gonna look in the parts unlimited catolog and see if there are any part numbers that are the saem between the two.

also I am gonna try and get mine on a dyno pretty soon so I will know the HP and Torq. I am guessing that mine will put out 16-18 HP and 14-15 torq. I am jsut guessing but mine is also highly modified with the K&N, snorkle, and HMF. so i stock kodiak will probly be aobtu 2 hp less.

What is the **** stroker kit you were talking about, because I intend on going through my motor and upgrading what I can.  Also would be the way you would go with it. I still want to do every day trail riding with also. If I bore it how for do I go on the first bore.

well from looking at a parts unlimited online catalog they dont even have a wisco piston set for a big bear 400. but they do for a kodiak 400 93-98. ok nvm ProX says that the 93-98 kodiak 400 uses the same piston as the 00-05 big bear.

The crank, piston and cam should be interchangeable, but mostly everything 'downstream' of the crank probably wouldn't be, cases included.

I have always been fond of the older Kodiaks. How about some more pictures from you owners?

FYI, Yamaha advertised the 93-98 Kodiaks at 21hp & 23 lb-ft of torque bone stock... at the crankshaft, of course.

Thanks for the HP/TQ numbers. I will get some pics of my Kodiaks up in a few days. I thought I had some on file of my '95, but I couldn't find them.

as far as the stroker, if you want the most power out of your kokiak that would be the way to go. and I believe that you would still be able to ride it on trails. but if you jsut decide to bore it go with the .5mm over piston nkit from wisco. I screwed up and bored mine the whole 1mm over and then the shop bored the cylinder to big and that cylinder is pretty much trash now. so I wouldn't recomend going the whole 1mm yet that way you still have one more bore incase something happens. I ran the 1mm for about a month and never got to take it on a ride but just from fiding around the house I could pull 26 laws up in 1st and 2nd low. and now I am running a stock piston and bore and you cant even get the front tires to come anywhere close to lifting. but I kick myself in the foot for not getting the strocker in the first place. becuase after boreing my cylinder and piston and stuff was arond $250 and then having to buy a new used cylinder and piston was arouond $150. so I should have jsut went ahead and sent my motor to **** and had it really built for around $800-900. so if anything else happens to it now that is what I am going tto do.

I finally got out today and snapped a few shots of my Kodiaks. They're a little dusty since it doesn't rain anymore I recently repainted the racks and bumpers on the '95 with wrinkle finish paint like new ones, and it looks great!
