This may be a dumb question but is there an air or fuel screw on my carb on an 08 500.I can't find one without taking the whole thing off. I don't think there is one.(not the idle screw)

Yes there is but it is covered up by a brass plug from the factory, the brass plug will have a small pin hole in the center. To get access to it you will have to take a small drill bit and drill out the brass plug covering it up but it is not really needed and highly not recommended as it is very easy to mess the whole carb up. Most carb kits will tell you to adjust the pilot screw and for the most part it is not necessary.

Thanks Dirt that helps.I'm just tryin to get all of my usable stock power out of her. Its clutched now i have to figure out the jetting.I refuse to pay 1-200 bucks for a jet kit when i can buy jets for 2 to 10 bucks a piece no way. I'll figure it out. I have the k&n filter coming we'll see what that does.If I'm not getting enough air there i'll do some other tricks and if I have to I will rejet alittle bit.Then  of course I might have to play with the clutch a little more but I'll figure it out eventually!!

 1-200 bucks for a jet kit ????? Where you buying jet kits from ?? A jet kit ain't but about 30.00-40.00 bucks. You will get the most gains from the different needle in the jet kit than you will from the bigger jets. You will chase your tail for days trying to drill out jets and still never get it tuned right.

Dirtmw20; can you tell me what needle (part #) you used in your 500? I'm trying to chase down an issue with my 04.5 sp500 where it acts like it runs out of gas on a long pull. I'm thinking of raising the needle but might consider a different needle too.

I have no idea of the part number for JUST the needle, the needle came in the carb kit.

What do you mean by long pull?I f you mean long pull at WOT that should not be a needle issue.At WOT the needle should not be a factor as it would be up past the main jet.You could have some electrical problem somewhere?

If it is running out of gas on a wide open run, sounds like more a float level problem to me than anything.

What I mean by long pull is I've got a road with about a 7-8% grade that I've been testing on and I open it up at the bottom of the hill and after about 1/8 mile or so the enging starts to fall on it's face acting like it's running out of gas, if I keep on the throttle the engine will start to pop and sputter and die if I don't let off the throttle. It's not running rich as there's no black smoke and I've jetted down to 150. I played with the needle clip position starting at the third slot, which is stock, then making a run in the forth and fifth position meaning that I'm raising the needle letting more fuel in. There is maybe a slight improvment in the sense that it doesn't start acting up quite as soon but the enevetable still occurs. I've checked the float level in the garage and it's right on the money. I think what I need to do next it check it on the hill when it dies and see if there's any fuel in it then. If there is then I know it's not a fuel problem and need to look elsewhere like electrical. Make sense?

Sounds lean -- You, "jetted down"? That would cause it to run leaner also.

Pull a plug and take a look at it and see how it is running.

When the problem first occurred I had a 160 in there for winter running so it definitely wasn't lean at that time. I then went to a 155 and the problem didn't go away, same thing with the 150 so I think I ruled out both the lean and too rich theory. Like I said above my next step is to look at the float level and look at the plug too. I've heard of bad stators causing problems like this so that might be it down the road.

At WOT the only thing that will effect your jetting is the main jet.

Try this;

Place some tape over part of your intake (if you can't reach your intake snorkle, then cover part of your air filter with tape.)  and make a run. If it gets better then you are too lean. go up on the jet. If it gets worse, you are too rich,  go down on the jet.
