I am looking into getting some ATV implements for trail work.  Does anybody have any experience with these and what kind do you like?  These **** things are expensive and want to get right the first time.

Yes you are correct...  they are very expensive.  What are you looking for?  Disc harrow, plow or buster, drag, cultipaker, or an "all in one"?  Lots of choices out there.  Check out the PlotMaster Hunter 400.  Wow!  It will set you back over $ 3000.  Here is a good couple of websites:

Just rent a tractor and disc, and be done quicker and better. Also cheaper.

What sort of "trail work" do you anticipate doing?

The reason that I ask is that there are hundreds of things  you can bolt on to a four wheeler, many are part of a "system" that makes like branded implements easy to attach and switch.  Most (but definately not all) are of excellent quility and probably worth the insane prices that they command.
What I have not seen, is the sort of implement you're seeing actually work out on a trail.  ATVs aren't earthmovers, they can't tear out roots and boulders.  Disk harrows are too light to "flatten" existing trails, and  you really don't want to anyway, you want to pack a trail in (adding gravel or similar) versus tearing it up...

The thing I have ever seen work out on a trail maintenance crew is a drag behind brush hog style mower, and pretty much that is for fields and meadows, to define the allowable area.  It's not terribly "off road capable", it had to be picked up and carried in a better suited wagon over a good chunk of trail.

if we knew better what it is you are trying to accomplish, we'd be much better able to assist.

There is a group I ride with that does trail maintenance with the forest service.  We have been at it for the last couple of year through pick and shovel work.  I wanting to speed the process up some by putting a little metal to the ground and fixing some areas a little more swiftly.

I am not sure what your trails entail but if they are in the woods then an atv implement is not going to help you.  You would need a four wheel drive compact tractor with heavy duty implements to stand up to the abuse of trail maintenance.  Look at a rental company and rent a tractor with the implements.  I would suggest renting instead of borrowing someones because of the wear and tear on implements.  However if your trails are through open areas with a loose soil then an atv implement might work for you.  For the price of an atv implement you can rent a tractor allot.  If you want a cheap tractor to use get an older 2wd Industrial tractor with a loader.  It will be big but it can take the abuse from trail maintenance and they can be found for around $4000.
