ok something is up with my bike and i have no idea what it is. i was doing about 6 mph on a trail when it started making a loud clack noise and nosediving. it sounds like its either coming from the tranny or the clutch. i haven't had a chance to pull the housing cover off yet to scope things out in there but has anyone had this problem before? it sounds like maybe a gear is broken or something, it does it in Hi, Low, and Reverse but not in neutral. any help would be appreciated, thanks.

inside the clutch housing, its what gives you your engine braking.  most time when it goes out u just have no engine braking, but my buddy had a 700 in his shop that was doing the same thing you're describing and it was a broken one way bearing.   about a $150 fix with labor.   i'm sure hormel knows about em.

its inside clutch housing

probably not a bad idea to dissasemble the clutch and check it out and then tell us what you found in there

could also be a gear, I cant remember which gear caused that, but someone I know had a  700 at nationals and his did this
look for one of the dorcheat diggers group and they can help you if its not the one way bearing, vampirekitty can get you to him, shes usually in the nationals threads
I think he called it a bevel gear in the transmission, couldnt tell you how big of a deal that one is though

am I right on the bevel gear?  have you heard of that one before?
It was some guys camping next to me, he seemed to know what he was doing, he came to our camp, drank a few beers and helped me change a bad timing chain, and was quick a realigning the side case oil gears, which takes me a few minutes to think through

sscard, i'm not sure about the bevel gear--it could be that as well. i just never came across this.  i onlly suggested th 1way because i just saw a 700 with a very similiar problem, but you are right, could be the other as well.  longside, the one way bearing is inside the wet clutch.

I am not saying for sure it is bevel gear, I am not a transmission guy
I can fix clutch and motor, not tranny
I would agree on checking one way bearing first, the bevel gear is buried in the tranny not in the clutch on the outside, check that first for sure

are you not under warranty?

what do i need to drain the oil for?

If you don't drain it before pulling the wet clutch cover, you will have oil every where.  Also you better go ahead and order the gasket as they normally can't be reused.

For the 700 the part# is 3B4-15463-00

I had what sounds like a similar issue with mine.  All of a sudden my clutch was making a horrible noise.  I shut it down right away and pulled it out of the bush.  Got it home and pulled everything apart, only to find nothing.  I put it all back together thinking it was internal, and I would have to take it in.

After I got it together, I fired it up anyway and all was good.  Been good ever since.  I suspect the one way bearing was bound up somehow, as it was the only piece that had any marks on it.

There is a post of my ordeal on here somewhere.

Look up DorcheatGrizzly. It was the bevel gear that broke at Nats. It had the same initial symptoms.

Look up DorcheatGrizzly (Jay Gore). It was the bevel gear that broke at Nats. It had the same initial symptoms. It was a complete engine tear down. Only took him about an hour and a half to tear down, split the case, and completely reassemble. He is my best friend and by far the fastest most effective mechanic that     I         have ever seen.

try it in neutral if engine runs ok one way bearing sould be ok
belt will turn in neutral with some throttle
try in for, or rev, if popping noise heard in bevel gears
some teeth broken off some are not
bike will pull on good teeth and pop or lock up on broke teeth
gear set 300.00 plus case has to be split

ok whether i put it in forward or reverse it pulls then locks up, pulls then locks up. if i put it in neutral it doesn't make any kind of noise or anything. i shoulda figured it was the more expensive of the 2 that was broken, lol.

always check easy first. i would check oil drains for metal at engine and diffs. if metal found in engine i would  pull belt housing and wet clutch housing off and check for damage. if clutch and bearing ok it must be bevel gears (yamaha calls middle drive gears). to be sure u can remove rear diff and remove output shaft housing (careful to save shims) . it will just side out back of engine

i pulled everything off that's behind the clutch housing cover up to the bearings, all i have is the back cover thats still bolted to the engine/tranny and the shafts coming out of the engine/tranny. which one has the 1 way bearing, engine or tranny? this is the first time i ever mess with any of this so i'll have a lot of questions, lol.

i pulled everything off that's behind the clutch housing cover up to the bearings, all i have is the back cover thats still bolted to the engine/tranny and the shafts coming out of the engine/tranny. which one has the 1 way bearing, engine or tranny? this is the first time i ever mess with any of this so i'll have a lot of questions, lol.

It's in/behind that housing that you still have bolted to the engine.  Unbolt it, and give it a tug.  The shaft, housing and everything will all come off as one piece. You will see it then.

You did drain the oil already?  If not, do it before you unbolt the housing.  And like I said before, you will need a new gasket for re assembly.
