Which would be the best in mud/water in the 28 inch size...I need to get a set of tires that my girlfriend can actually steer with.

I would definately rule out the 'Lites.  My Grizzly with 26" 589s outperformed my friends Brute with 30" 'Lites.  I know there's more than just tires that could cause that, but given the difference in tires, it speaks volumes for how badly of a tire the 'Lites are in the mud.

As far as the remaining tires, the 589s or the 'Bugs, there's another thread discussing the two.  It seems to be pretty even on both sides.

You can't go wrong either way between the 589s and 'Bugs.

589:heavier than bugs, wear like steal, dig to the bottom and bite, cost is high.

bugs:lighter than most (really one of the ligest "mud" tires out), wear good if you keep them off the street, stay on top of the mud and paddel through, cost is a lot lower than most.

it is hard to find them in 28''s, you can go 27's or get gators witch wear better but are a little heaver, just a little, but still weight less than 589. I have had both, 589's and bugs, and they are both a great tire, but where i live and the type of mud i ride in the bugs work better.

Mud Bugs or Outlaw MST's would be two of my top choices for her.

I just called a tire place and the lady told me that the lugs on 26" mudbugs are different than the lugs on the 27" mudbugs and that the 27's wear faster... does anyone know about this?

p.s. I don't mean to steal your topic there's just so many mudbug topics already

Lol....I think the lady lied to you.....I mean why would 27's wear faster than 26's....They are the same tire basically even if the tread is slightly different they should both be made of the same tread compound

The 26" have a flatter profile, so more tire hits the ground and therefore wears better.  The 27" are more rounded, so the tips of the lugs hit the ground more and take more abuse on hard pack and roads, and wear faster.
Also, the 27", for some reason, run narrow.  Mine do anyways!

If you do some researching on this forum you will find this statement to be true.  The smaller bugs 26" and down have a different lug width than the 27's and 28's and wear much better.  They are also reported to be better all around in the 26" than the 28"

i got mudlites and had 589s and friend has swamplites. Fist my friend hates his swamps and wonts mudlites. 2nd mudlite are a better trail by a little and 589s are better in mud. I would go with 589s for mud ridding and littes for trail. If you cannt make up your mind They make a tire called mudlite xtrs or some thing like that. Its a cross from mudlites and 589s. Your girlefriend sould be able to turn all of them easy.

Well from experience I loved my 589's on the trail I mean we have trails here that are winding but also very muddy and steep
