Pros: 1. they obviously help alot in the mud 2. BOTH front wheels spin constantely instead of one stopping after getting in a bind.   Cons: 1. They're a ***** to turn, especially with bigger tires. 2. They'll wear you out after a long day of trail riding. If you're only using the bike to mud I'd suggest getting one, but if you're like me and like to trail ride too then I probably wouldn't, thats the reason I haven't gotten one yet.

the spool locker is a little harder than stock to turn on dirt while moving slowly
sometimes very hard to turn on pavement or concrete especially with wide tires or lots of weight but the extra effort is usually worth the gain in mud plus you get some big arms to boot

What 06 honda said is exactely right i have one on my 2001 kodiak and its preaty dang hard to turn but i think if u go mudding it is a necessity, so it basicly depends on what kind of riding u do if you should get one

ive also been thinking about putting one on my 06 foreman.  i am just wondering what are the risks of breaking things? what will break and how easy will it break?  i LOVE the mud, i trail ride but i hit every mud hole thats along that trail.........by the way im running the deep lugged EDLs i dont know if that has any effect on anything but just thought i would throw that in

I had a DGL on my 02 Big Bear and it was the best mod to that bike. It is only hard to turn when 4wd was engaged which was only engaged when i was in the mud. If your bike is a all time 4wd then i would highly recommend a 4-2-4 to go along with the locker. Its not made for hill climbing because it grabs too much and wants to pull the handlebars out of your hands when a tire grabs a root and thats not the best thing to happen on a steep hill.

With a spool locker its very hard to turn, better head to the gym to prepare yourself if your getting one. The upsie of the spool type locker is the cost, they cost next to nothing. DGL is almost the perfect thing, it locks the front end, and turns almost as easy as stock. The downside of the DGL is that it has to be rebuilt after so long, which means your going to have to take the whole diff out about once a year roughly. Another downside is cost, the DGL costs around $350-400, or if your an unfortunate Canadian like myself its going to cost $700-750.
Thats whats holding me back from getting one, the cost and the fact that I wan't to put it in there and forget about it. Which isn't going to happen with either type of locker.

whats the difference between the spool and the DGL locker???  and by the way, i ride in south east texas, which is where mud nationals is........we got some bad stuff around here (axle twisting holes EVERYWHERE) .......am i increasing a chance of breaking CVCs and stuff with a locker?? if so, how much of a chance?

Mac is right about the spool being hard to turn with.  I had a spool in my foreman.... they suck if you want to drive the bike.  It is really hard to turn.  Not sure about how often dgl's need rebuilt.

I'm not sure where you get the $750 figure from Mac, I got mine for about $500.

Everywhere I looked so far it was 749 for my Rincon, where did you get yours for $500?

Yes BIGforeman500, with a locker it is much easier to snap axles.

The DGL is the only way to go IMHO. Easy to steer while delivering true 4-wheel drive. The outside tire spins a little faster than the inside tire in a hard turn. Steers a lot better than some factory 4-wheel drive systems and considerably easier than a spool. It can be un-locked ( a spool can't be ) with the factory 2-wd option or a Warn 4-2-4 shifter so you can enjoy your ATV for 2wd trail riding. It doesn't break anything more or less than factory Yamaha, Polaris, Kawasaki, Suzuki diffs do when they are engaged. It takes an outdated Honda 4wd system and turns it into a modern, true locking 4wd system. If you own a Honda and play in the mud, this mod delivers far better traction than the stock Honda system. All other companies have a true locking front diff system on their later model ATV's except Honda. We have sold 1000's and 1000's of DGL's over the last few years because of this reason.

I got it from Rec Tech.  They are a dealer in Saskatchewan.  I can't remember the exact price but it was in the 5-550 range.  PM me if you want some more info about them.

They range from $ 305.00 to $ 350.00 depending on the model. Pro Staff members get a 10% discount off these prices. The last time I heard the value of the U.S. Dollar against the Candian Dollar was very close. I would think this is a very good time for a locker to be bought at a good savings in Canada. This is a Nafta qualified item so your local Canadian dealer can buy it without high duties, plus the shipping is probably only about $35.00 or less to a lot of locations in Canada. We offer our Pro Staff program to direct retail buyers in Canada, which would take care of shipping in most cases and maybe even still get you a little discount. The directions for installation is excellent, written step by step with pictures showing how to progress thru the installation. Most folks can install one between two and three hours.

Install instructions were fairly good.  One thing it doesn't mention in there that I have heard a lot of people say on the forum is to soak the clutches in gear oil while assembling it.  I couldn't see how that would hurt anything so I did it too.

One big problem that I had with mine was that I had the wrong locker sent to me.  In 03-04 they changed some things in the front diff of the foreman. For one style you have to machine the ring gear and the other you don't.  I machined mine then found out I had the wrong locker so I had to buy a brand new ring/lsd assembly and get a different locker shipped to me.  Very expensive.  So I would reccomend you call HL once you get your diffy tore apart and make sure you have the correct dgl and that you don't machine peices you're not supposed to.

All in all it is still a very good mod for a honda.

i installed a dgl in my rancher about 1.5-2 yrs ago and its one of the best mods I have installed.  But like mudcat grizz mentioned, I would also suggest getting the 424.  It will make the steering noticeably easier.  I bought my DGL for $275

Replaces the front driveshaft on fulltime 4wd machines letting you switch to 2wd when you want.

A DGL will not take away your being able to switch between 2 and 4 wheel drive.  It just replaces the guts in the differential to give power to both front tires when the differential is getting power from the driveshaft.

When i was talking about the 4-2-4 i thought your fourman was all time 4wd. If its push button 4wd then the locker will not affect this at all. When you are in 4wd it is near impossible to turn or at least it was on my bigbear. Thats is why an all time 4wd would need the 4-2-4 or it would have a turning radius of a 747 jet.

I bought my Foreman used and it already had one it, but needed rebuilt. So I rebuilt it. Between the guys on the forums and the folks at HL, it was actually pretty easy to do. Just make sure you use a torque wrench. I also replaced my bearings with HL sealed bearings and put ****s in and replaced some seals on the final output shaft since I had all that stuff torn apart. Start to finish was around 5 hours spread out over a couple days after I got home from work...and I have NEVER done anything similar to that before.
