I have a problem with my rear differential getting filled with water and mud. I took it into my local dealer to get it looked at. I assumed that there was a seal that had gone bad. The Honda guys claim that there is nothing to keep water and mud from getting in. The seals only keep the oil from getting out. Can someone please explain if there is any truth to this claim. How do you make a one way seal? Why is the diff vented if it is not mud and water tight?

your seals are bad and they are idiots.  i did my entire rear-end(brake and diff.) from about 35.00$  it's been bone dry ever since.  just be careful cracking the rear diff. apart.  you should replace your shoes too while you're in there.  use plenty of high quality grease where needed and don't mix up the shims in the rear diff.  when you order these parts also order new crush washers for all your fill/drain plugs also.  replace these after you change your fluid after the re-build.  but make no mistake about it this will be a recurring problem if you ride 3/4's up your tire.

My wife’s 420 is filling up with water in its rear diff., wanted to know what I would have to do to remove the diff.  Would appreciate step by step instructions on completing this task if possible.
