How much top end would I lose, are they really weaker like I've been hearing, and is there any reason I shouldn't put them in my thundercat ? Also if I do switch, how much would my 3.6 gears be worth ?

I sold my 3.6 gears for like $300 bucks i think it was, seemed fair i guess sence they are used..

Iam not for sure but i bet it would put you down in the 60s with 4.0 gears and low gear would be down in the 20s for top speeds.
If i had one thats what would be in it but i also dont care about high speed, i like low gears myself if i could get 4.5 gears i would...lol

but with putting power down to the ground much faster it would be easyer to break thing i would guess.

Ya I don't care too much about top end, and I'm goin to 31's so I'm strongly considering the 4.0's. If I run the 4.0's do I still need to run it in low when in the mud ? And was that $300 for the front and rear gears

it was for front and rear gears no cases.

I run mine in high allmost all the time but when i pull up to anything to crappy i put it in low, now i have left it in high to go threw some nasty stuff with waterin it but once the tires get to spinnng they spin to fast for my taste so i started useing low more often just to keep the tire speed under control easyer. but thick mud i use low no matter what.

but i have never road a TC so i cant say what gear it should or could be ran in.. aim sure someone will pipe in..

Also, when I bought the t cat, I was told he already had put the 3.6 gears in it, before I put them up for sale I'd like to know for sure that's what they are, so I don't accidently lie to someone, so how do I know for sure they're 3.6's

You could count the teeth on the ring gear and divide it by the number of teeth on the pinion gear.

i'd wait & hold them til you kno for sure that you are gonna use the 4.0's & then sell them. i just hate re-buying stuff that i should've held onto longer. my 2 cents.

should be a 10 pinion and a 36 tooth ring gear.

Jack it up, put a mark on your driveshaft and front nose of your rear diff, and a mark on one axle and the side of the diff.  Turn the tire one full revolution, and count your drive shaft revolutions.  One axle rotation should be 3.6 driveshaft rotation.  I know, it's hard to measure 3.6.  But if it has the 3.1's, it will be right at 3 turns.  4.0's would be 4 turns.  So 3.6's are about midway between them.  Are your eally confused now?

The top speed of 63mph is the estimate if running stock tires. The bigger the tire, the less top speed loss. With my 27's and 3.6's I have not loss any top speed at all because I'm now back to the same gear/tire ratio as stock which is 25inch/3.1. 29.5 inch or taller tire will create the same stock ratio with 4.0 gears. In theory, the loss of top speed will be mostly due to the weight of the 31's you have, not the gears, which in theory again can be countered with added horsepower.
