Does anyone know if it's possible to purchase a front differential lock for this ATV? It's a 2006 Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to locate one. If possible to purchase, and someone can point me in the right direction, how difficult are they to install on a scale of 1-10 with ten being most difficult? Thanks in advance for any and all help. Very much appreciated!!!!!................. ALAN

Detroit Gearless Locker 3 is the locker that you need to fit your atv.
Even though the websites states that it fits 2002-2005 models, the 2006 HAS THE EXACT SAME differential as the 2005. The atv is pretty much identical betwen those years.
If you find that hard to believe, then go to any online Yamaha parts fiche, and researd it yourself....they are both the same.

5FU-46160-02-00
Thats the part number for the complete front differential on a 2005 AND 2006 BigBear 400

Use this link to look at the parts fiche (diagrams)

Good luck with it and I hope this points you in the right direction.

Should I expect any major handling changes once the locker is installed? Are the changes only obvious once four wheel drive is engaged or should I expect something different? I really don't do a lot of mudding, but I do find myself in some pretty nasty places to retrieve downed game animals during the winter months, mostly in wooded areas with lots of loose leaves and soft dirt covered with a couple inches of snow/slush or freezing rain. To date, I've never had it in a place where the winch was needed to get me out, but I've wondered a few times if it wouldn't be necessary. The extra "bite" will hopefully make a dramatic difference in performance.......... or will it?

if you could find a 07+ BB front diff and switch you can swap out your 05 for the 07 with diff. lock.

The extra traction is a real bonus.....BUT, you will notice it with heavier steering at all times. Even in 2wd.
I have the DGL installed in my Grizzly, and I love the added traction. But, the handling is a little twitchy at speed. Even while riding in close quarters on regular atv trails, the atv can pull either direction.
It is not that bad, just heavier steering...thats all. You have to be on top of the atv steering at all times. Extra attention is required. After a little time riding though, you will get used to it.

The added traction is incredible as well. You never know how much extra traction 1 wheel can make, until you have it.
To me, the added traction and easier mobility the locker has given, FAR OUTWAYS the slight handling twitchyness and heavier steering. I will NEVER again have another atv WITHOUT a locker

Thanks again Dezz. You've been a tremendous help. Do/did you install yours yourself, or did you have it installed via a dealer? It doesn't look like it would be too difficult for me to attempt myself, but I'm really curious as to the level of difficulty. Also, I plan to install ITP Mud Lites on all four (factory wheels), and a two inch High Lifter lift kit for additional clearance off the beaten path. I'm thinking 27's on the Mud Lites.......... Overkill? Once again, thanks a bunch for sharing the information. Much appreciated!!!

27s won't be overkill for the bike considering you're going with mud lites.  As to the degree of difficulty, it's not that hard.  Just make sure you put all the shims back in their respectful places.  I tore my rear diff apart and it's got the sealed wet brake in it, a pain in the rear, but easy to figure out once you know what you're looking at.  The front is easy as cake.  Here's a link to the install instructions so you can see what you're getting yourself into.  https://www.highlifter.com/product_images/product-installation_pdf-7121.pdf  Good luck with it.

I would think the DGL would be stronger. I tore down a front diff with the diff lock. Its operating by plastic. The motor runs a gear on the plastic rail to engage it. I was a little disappointed when I seen the plastic in there.

27 Inch Mudlites being overkill for a BigBear....LOL...god NO.
The BigBear will turn those tires for fun. Also, compared to stock tires, you will love the added traction of those tires. They are a great trail/mud combination tire.

As for the install...it is easy. Tearing apart the front diff is very easy. You just have to make sure you place the shims in the correct position during reinstall.
Now, the only shims/spacers the DGL 3 has is actually apart of each axle coupling. One is larger (thicker) than the other, and needs to be installed in the correct position (side) of the diff. housing. This is stated right in the installation instructions.
The shims and spacers installed from factory will be removed, BUT, make sure you keep them in the right order as removed. When I removed mone, I tied all the shims together, in the order as removed, and tied them to which gear side they came from. This will make reinstallation (if ever required) of the regular differential gears much eaiser and faster.

Good Luck with it and keep us posted. If you have anymore question just ask.....If you need any information about the capabilities of the BigBear, just ask Kidoncoffee.....he has alot of experience with the BB. He has/had more than 1. We are all glad to help.
