Take the time and run the codes on it and check the fuel pressure.  If it is below 10 at idle I would not buy it unless you are ready to spend $2000 on a lift pump and injector pump.  Other than that they are great trucks..

what pressure it has at WOT is more important than idle ...

and if it's just the lift pump it will be about 150$

when i put a fuel pressure gauge on mine at 89k it had 7 psi at idle and 0 at wot

new stock lift pump with a big line kit had it at 14psi idle and 8 ish at wot @ 500 rwhp

second lift pump went at 159k and i relocated the stock pump to the rear of the frame

now has 16 psi at idle and 10 psi at wot

the injection pump is still original at 170k and has been at 500 hp since 89k ...

this is a first year for the auto tranny as well 47re as opposed to 47rh ...

NV4500 would be a five speed  (better)

and NV5600 would be a six speed (best)

search a cummins site ...

lots of diesel misinformation on this site ...

check the block on the drivers side 6 inches from the front right above the oil pan

there will be a 1.5"x1.5" number cast there ...

53 is bad

54-55-56 good ... empty with no number is best ...

go to any free cummins site and search 53 block ...

I might be wrong but wouldnt a 98' be a 12 valve not a 24. If it is a 12 valve theres nothing wrong with that. Cummins all the way.

dodge switched mid year 98 from 12 valve to 24

holy grail would be 98 quad cab(first year with a rear door)
short bed (first year for dodge in 3/4 - 1 tons)
6 speed manual (first year in dodge)
upgraded interior

and most importantly the largest P-pumped 12 valve motor ever ...

all mechanical ...

puts a smile on my face just dreaming about it

yea just make sure on that pump because my dad just had to put a new injector pump and lift pump in his '99 and without to much power the auto trannys hold up pretty good

650twin one of my buddies has one of those but he butchered it for a pulling truck. I do think its funny how he put $11,000 more into it than I put into mine and puts out 50hp more than me. He beat me 3 times out of the 11 times I pulled against him this year. 2 of the times I broke.

cool ...

what did he spend the 11k on?

p-pumped motors don't usually take a lot of coin ...

for pulliing ... o ring the head ... crank up the fuel ... big single ... 1500$ if you're carefull

auto trans 5k or clutch 2k

then it's play time ...

what did you break ...

and does he need to rebuild his motor this winter too?  (just read your other post)

I do not know the details or how he managed to spend that much. He had somebody build it for him so there was a lot of labor expense. The motor is fine, its a cummins, I do belive that he was smart and had the pistons fly cut nd coated but I doubt it.  Its just a 2.8 truck.  automatic.
