I went on another west texas hunt and some of the guides and other hunters talked me into taking this cull bull scimitar... well we all went out and found the animal and started stalking and got to  156 yards and I propped up on the shooting sticks and boom... shot and the animal dropped... so here we all go jumping up and down happy... I mean exstatic.   Well all of the sudden the animal starts kicking and jumps up and starts running off.   I tried to get another shot in on the animal but never could due to trees and stuff.

The blood trail only went about 30 yards meaning it was a low or high hit probably without an exit wound.

We looked up and down those hills for hours... almost completely covering the 1500 acre area these animals are kept in (not high fence either) and no luck.

So I didnt spend almost a grand on an animal that I didnt get to bring home.  The reason it was cheap is b/c the right side horn is broken off.  I talked to a taxidermist and he said he could get me one to fix it.

BUT IT DOESNT MATTER BC THE ANIMAL ISNT DEAD.

I really am heart broken b/c I like to make quick clean kills and I HATE to waste an animal/meat.

anyway here is a pic for those who arent familiar with the scimitar horned oryx

Yup, i had the same problem.. shot a massive 8 point at about 250 yards or so, and it walked a bit and looked like it was going to drop, and stumbled a little bit, then took off.. We tracked blood for about 30 to 40 yards and then nuthin.. the blood got less and less... i shot it with a 35 caliber.. which has a super heavy bullet, and it droped more than i thought it would, and so i shot him real real low...

Ouch, Can I ask what ranch you were on? We usually hunt the Caza Brio out there. I have wanted an Oryx for a long time.
The sad thing is in a few weeks you will find it by looking where the vulchers are.

nope no refunds.... whether the animal lives or dies I own it now....  or thats how the outfitter has the contract on it.

the ranch is the Epperson Ranch in Rocksprings(or rock springs) its in west texas near kerrville.  take 41 off of 10 to 377(i think) and take a left and it brings ya into rocksprings... the epperson ranch is just before the town on the right.... owners name is Willie Epperson.... hes kinda weird

I would still like to thank the guides Mark, Jeremy and Jason with MMK outfitters.  Great guys to deal with!

If I was the outfitter I wouldn't refund any money because of a misplaced shot either. The animal was in his sights, he squeezed the trigger. It's not the outfitters fault at all. Anyway, sorry to hear about that and better luck next time.

I never said anything about a refund of my money.  I admit my mistake.

Yea I know. Someone else posted about getting a refund or something. That really wasn't directed at you.

I went back and edited my post earlier. It did seem like I was directing it at you and that's not what I meant.

    ohh I got ya!

the only thing that bothers me is the animal may possibly run off and die and not be found.... which I'm sure it will be found if that happens but its dead and nothing from the animal would have been used.

I PRAY that the animal survives and I get another chance to go back for him another day.  I'ma stay in touch with the land owner and see what happens.  I'de surely hate for it to be a total waste.  the money isnt that big of a deal... it was a heck of an experience!
