My rear axles slide out of the diff.  Foam in the back of my seat was messed up and is causing it to tear where the staples are sticking through the seat pan.  It came with a pin-hole in the radiator that had to be replaced.  Other than that it's great.

Well, as cool as the 850 is, Ive had a few issues.

First week I had the bike, the seat came undone, polaris gave me a new one. Again, a few weeks later the second seat came undone. My dealership took that seat apart at polaris request, and re-made the seat themselves. This was last week, this seat has already shown signs of coming undone.

The bike sometimes will not start, and if it does this, its necessary to take the side cover off the bike to access the spark plugs as the motor is flooded. This happens about every 2 weeks.

The worst problem happened yesterday up in the mountains here in Colorado, I was about 30 miles from the trailhead, and the weather was about 2 degrees when the belt broke....  My quad is completely stock, and has 128 miles on it.  I don't beat on my quad and 99% of my trail riding is done in low range, so Im not sure what happened to kill the drivebelt.

My dealer was closed to day, but I will be taking the quad in tomorrow to see what they say.

Im starting to wish I had bought an 800. Ive got an 02 700 sportsman with over 4700 miles, and its never had an issue. The XP seems like a dud.

Sure, heres a pic from when I brought it home, and one of the quad after I made a new bumper for it.

All of the trail miles on my quad are in the deep snow at 12,000+ ft elevation. Between the deep snow, and the lack of oxygen, you have to drive in low or the quad won't move.

Looks as if there might be some  belt issues on the new XP. Are they hard to change on the trail?

That sucks GPS..I ride about 95% low range and have had no problems. No problems with the seat either, and I take it off alot to clean the machine out. I wasn't too keen on the new design for keeping the seat in place so I am careful to support the middle of the seat when removing it.

Im not sure on how tough a belt change is, as Im going to let the dealer take care of it this time.

The seat issue has been with the tightness of the black vinyl on the rear left corner. Its as if the foam inside shrinks and the seat cover gets really loose. The first time I took it into the dealer, they just swapped it out no questions asked. The second time, they made me bring the quad down to check the rest of the bike for abnormal wear & tear. They told me to let them know if the seat they made for me didn't work, it didn't, so I'll let them know tomorrow when I bring it in for the belt issue.

The strange thing about the belt breakage is that the quad stopped moving, but when I tried to rev the engine up in neutral, it would only hit about 3500 rpm. Ive broken belts on sportsmans & scramblers before, and when it happens, the engine usually freewheels to the moon. The XP feels like something is holding it back. I am a mechanic by trade, so its really a struggle to not go out into the garage and take it apart myself to see what went wrong. But I'll let the dealer handle it as its obviously under warranty.

I'll update on what they say tomorrow.

Hummmm, I have about 100 miles on mine so far. I had a check engine light come on the other day. The code had to do with the speedo not being able to register the proper MPH the bike was running. The dealer told me to clean the mud from the front brake rotors. They said the sensor is located there. As soon as it was clean the code went away and the check engine light went off. I guess that was the problem. The sensor counts tire rotation and if clogged it will pop up an engine code.

When in mud and high range it is very easy to slip the belt. I have spelled mine twice so I guess it slipped slightly. I was not in a bind but for a few seconds. If in anything thick, switch to Low! The power of the 850 will smoke the belt quick.

I have had no other problems.

Well I have had mine for about 2 weeks now and just about a 100 miles.  (lots of time off before the end of the year or I lose it)  Anyways I haven't had any issues yet knock on wood and I have been riding in about 10 degree weather and lots of mud and snow. (just love the hand and thumb warmers) Now I am just waiting for a mount for my cycle country plow.  Its still so new they haven't made one for it yet.  Sorry to hear about the issues some of you guys are having I hope you get all the bugs worked out.

I hope polaris figures out the early issues quick and fixes them for the current production. My quad was built on september 24th, so its an early one, maybe the seat issues have something to do with that.

The belt problem & the flooding issue still worry me a little though...

I have had no seat issues or flooding problems. Mine did backfire a couple of time within the first 20 miles. I have not heard it do it again since then. My battery hot wire did wiggle loose once but I do not beleave it was tightened correctly at the dealer.

I'm over an hour away from my dealer so as long as it was still running I'm trying to wait.  I want as many problems to surface that may.  This way when I have to take it back we can take care of everything at one time.

I hear you on wanting to tear into. In your case best to let the dealer mess with it. But for future reference the belt change isn't as bad as many think. For easier access remove left rear tire. There is a removable frame section on the left rear. Remove 4 bolts and it comes off. Take out the cover bolts, all are retty easy to get at,they designed access to the bolts. Then the cover slides out where the frame section was removed from. The 2nd time you do it, it is cake.
Sounds like you obvioulsy have more issues than just the belt with it running poorly like that.and flooding.  Is it throwing any codes?
Knock on wood,I guess I have been lucky so far. I'd like to think these are isloated problems.
I,like Jonathon, have smelled the belt a few times. But everytime I was goofing off,cat walking ect. But other than that it has been tight.

Wow.  I don't understand why these problems didn't surface during R/D; my dealer told me that Polaris has spent a couple of years and countless hours in developing these XP's.  I hope everything works out for you guys and I'm sure Polaris will step up to the plate and make it right.

It's possible these are isolated issues. It would be interesting to know how many Xps are out there,vs how many are having the same problems. I venture that we only see a small percentage of the whole picture here on the net. Hard to say if it is a accurate cross section. Also R&D can not accurately represent everyone's riding/usage styles.
I've said it before, many new machines have issues, not just first year machines and not just the XP. haven't you seen threads where guys posts up problems with a brand new 08 800 for example? I have,it happens. And it isn't just Polaris'.  IMO the XP is in the spotlight so everyone is taking note of every little issue someone reports.
With the exception of MAYBE the rear axles and maybe the clutch set up, I have yet to see a hint of evidence of common issue. 2 people's seats tearing is not a common problem IMO. 1 guy breaking a belt and another smoking a belt, not a common problem. But I will say I have heard of a few people, myslef included, smelling the belt burning slightly, maybe in need of a clutch tweak? 1 guy with an engine that floods, not a common problem.

JMO....
I think maybe GPS's machine was made Friday afternoon.

Well, I just dropped it off at the dealer. We tried to push it out of my truck and the driveline was locked up, the tires wouldn't turn. They had to get the forklift out and carry the bike into the shop. They were going to tear into it immediately. They were all very interested to see what is going on. I give them 2 thumbs up on taking care of the issues with my quad quickly. I did notice when they started the quad up it had a check engine light on, but I didn't get a chance to see what it was.

They are supposed to call me in the morning and let me know what they find out.

I'll keep you posted!

Well, just got off the phone with the dealer. They said they needed to replace the belt, pulley's and drive clutch assembly. The belt was all shredded and birds nested around the drive clutch. The clutch itself had some damage to it, but I didn't get a chance to see it yet for myself. Polaris has agreed to pick up the tab for the whole repair. (obviously)

We'll see how it goes from here.

Good deal GPS..nice to see that Polaris is standing behind it. Not that I doubted they would..
Any word on the flooding problem? If you haven't had them look into it you need to. It isn't normal,as I am sure you know.

Nothing on the flooding yet, as its kind of hard to diagnose. The bike wasn't throwing codes for it, and the plugs are in good shape. Im going to see if they can either re-flash the computer or replace it with a newer unit.

So far everyone has been doing their best to remedy the problems, and for that I thank them.

Ive had dealers blow me off before with problems on cars/trucks, but I have to say that the ATV dealership has taken care of all of my problems quickly without incident.
