I'm thinking about getting rid of my son's honda 420 if it keeps giving me trouble. How is the Can-Am 400 compared to the honda 420, Will it turn the 27" outlaws pretty good. Can you give me the good and bad about the 400. Will I need a clutch kit to turn 27 laws and how good is the reverse with these kind of tires. My son is 11 yrs old and can handle pretty much of whatever you throw at him. Thanks

I have an 07 400. The 400  does fine as far as ride and power. It should turn 27s just fine. The problem is the 400 is hard to lift and snorkel. I would look at a 500.

Bought my 07 about 1 year and somthing ago  First to start off, this bike has great power compared to any other bike below its class or even in the 500cc class.  Holds it own against the big bores.  Suspension is great on this thing.  I have been beating on it for over a year now and it is still smooth from day one.  The "seat" is like sitting on your couch.  One of the best or the best seat out there.  Handling is great on this machine.  Most due to its size.  The overall look of the bike looks mean.  Visco 4wheel drive system most people rant about it, but I like it.  I don't really ride rocks where you would really need it all the time, but it does its job.  It could be better, but its fine for me what I ride.  There those times where it 3 wheels on creek banks and when the other one catches hang on

Answer your questions-

Plenty enough power to turn 27's in the thickest stuff you can find. Reverse is great, if you get stuck going foward reverse will get you our mose of the time  Clutch kit don't really need one, but it does bring the bikes attitude out I have been told.

Snorkel is easy to do. http://www.highlifter.com/forum/Can-Am_%22How_To%22_Quick_Links/m_2378359/tm.htm

Hard to lift yes, as long as you got cash. Pays to play

I ride mostly stock quads, and I love my 07 400XT better than anyother quad that I have ever had. I've got 4200 trouble free miles so far. The engine holds lots of oil and it runs cool so the oil doesn't break down as fast as some of the big bore bikes. This was an important factor for me!

You'll be wishing you would have gotten at least the 500.  The 400 will not turn the 27's in the thick stuff, but it will do pretty good on  the rest of the trails.

I have been racing an 08 400EFI with a HMF and dalton kit all year.  The bike has done really well in the 400 class but it cannot compete with the 500's.  If you are going to spend the money, its defintely worth upgrading to the v-twin can-am 500.

I would have to disagree. The 400 can turn my 27 in ANYTHING i have been in. It may not have been in high, but in low, it can still rev up pretty high. And yes it can compete with the 500's with the exception of maybe the suziki, the polaris, and the can-am(definatly the can-am)
Honestly, i couldn't ask for a better bike. I love it. I have had no trouble with it except for having to grease the u-joints all the time(because i ride in water alot) and the carb getting dirting(because the filter on the air line going to the diaphram poped off). The 650 and 500 are great units, but i like my 400. One of the greatest things about it is its fuel economy, which is one thing better than the big bores, which the average joe doesn't worry about, but if you cruise around alot, it helps. I highly recomend this bike for 11 year old, that is how old i was when i got mine.

Disagree on that too.
I can turn my 27's in any kind of thick mud that 800 can turn them in. I promise you that.  Have the extra money I would go straight to the 650 instead of the 500 due to the front suspension, but that is way to much bike for a 11 year old.

Try to post some pictures of the bottom less pond when I get home.

To me the 400 should be enough for him. It may be a tab bit to much for him depends on what kind of experience he has at handling atvs.

I don't know if they changed the airbox on the 09's. I know on the 07's, the airbox is a poor design. The bike will turn the 27's with no problems at all. If you plan on doing alot of mud riding, go with either the Dalton or the EPI clutch kit. I'm glad that they did come out with the EFI on the newer models. Good luck with your selection.

k, i have an outlander 400 and i love it, but i want to trade it in for the rancher 420 4x3 lol es. they have some friggen balls it had my outlander off the line for like 70 feet then i flew buy and i smoke  him on top end but he has more low power. and he beats the **** out of it and hasnt had a problem with it and does stuff i would never dare to do and im a pretty good rider. but if u get the 420 or can am 400 ull need a clutch kit for both either way imo. i need one for 25" executioners. i would probly lean towards the rancher myself but he if loves to go fast get the outlander mine tops out at 64 stock. i think the suzuki king quad 450 might be a good choice to
