Hello all, any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. Im trying to fix a quad for my mother and need a little advise from someone who has more knowledge of the subject than I.

Replaced both rear axle/ cvs, no problem. Next was the water pump. It would overheat and leaked from cover, so it must be it. No plastic cover on it. We took it to a shop and they said the shaft in there will get grooves from the seal or bearing and not work right. My thought is that the shaft is very heavy duty, must just be a seal.

1. How do I get that shaft out? Do I have to remove the stator and side engine case cover to remove that bearing and shaft?

2.That engine side cover gasket streams coolant now, should the coolant be able to get in there or is that the mech. seal failing?
There are hunks of "gasket maker" material around that seem, someone has been in there before. Should that be fixed, does it hold oil or coolant in?

3. I tried just replacing just that mech. seal and it popped apart while installing. Is it no good now? And how should I seal that copper cup? Tried a large socket but thats what popped it apart.

4. The fan does not come on, does it need sufficient coolant flowing to kick some sensor on? Or is there a fuse/relay somewhere?

Thank you anybody that can help with any of this :)

If the seal tore apart then it is no good.  There should  be a little crack where the coolant is pouring out right now.  You can either go in and put a new mechanical seal in or JB weld up the hole it's coming out of.  It IS ok to JB weld up the vent hole.  I did it and it's been running for nearly 4 years since with no problems.  Get the bike up to operating temp and check the fan wires with a meter.  If you don't have any voltage then check the fuses.  If that's not the case then change the temp sensor on the radiator.

Thanks for the reply. Well I replaced the mech. seal, but coolant is still leaking through by  where the shaft comes out. Im debating on buying another $30 seal and trying again.

Yea, it's really easy to tear the new seal.  When you pull the part that sticks out loose from the seal itself it's no good.  I did the same thing and put it back together anyway and it still leaked so I just JB welded the vent hole up.  Like I said, that was 4 years ago and it's still going strong.

Hey thanks man, very helpful info. I did tear something on that seal. The black most outer ring that sits atop the spring came off. It leaks through a gasket though, where is this weap hole or vent hole located? Not sure if that would help cause its leaking into the shaft and out that next case gasket. A new seal "should" stop that I hope.

Please let me know if Im thinking wrong, Id really like to just JB weld something and have it be done with, lol.

If your looking at the water pump impeller with the cover off there is another big cover behind the impeller that's bolted to the engine.  On the right hand side of it close to the bottom there is a weap hole where that cover meets the engine.  That's also where the gasket is at for that cover.  What year and type of bike is it?
