Is it true that if you say you are going to use your atv for farm use you will get a discount in some way? at any state or place?

I bought my foreman for farm use. You can't just say "I have a farm" and get off cheap. I didn't have to pay sales tax since it was for farm use, that is the only discount I received. There is extra paperwork to fill out, and I have heard of several people getting screwed big time because they lied on those forms, they ended up having to pay 2-3 times the original amount. But yes, it is tax exempt in most states in the US to my knowledge.

if it is considered farm equipment you should be able to write it off on your taxes aswell.

Its easy to do.  All you have to do is have a certain amount of land in your name, and have a tax id number.  I've bought all my atv's tax exempt.

Im not sure about Fl., but in Texas is has to be more than 5 acres.  I have 6.5 acres and I was able to get tax numbers.  I dont even have a cow or chickens on my place, haha.  It just goes but the acres.

I would be cautious. As I said, I have heard of people getting in big trouble because several years back they did this, but only because they had the land, not a "farm". They got hit with thousands worth of charges. I know when I asked about it, people were telling me about it.

I dug this thread up. It is from back when I was 2001_RECON posting about getting a my new quad. Good info there, also testimonials from people getting busted.

I had to list the uses for mine when I bought it.....riding fence line, hauling a poison sprayer, hauling feed, etc.
I'm in Tx, and actually do have a small farm, 30 acres, and have a couple donkeys and some pigs. You get a sales tax exemption and also able to claim it on your federal income tax, as well as depreciate it. Any money spent for maintenance and fuel is also tax deductible. You just better be able to prove it if they audit you.

When I bought my rancher like 5 yrs ago in nebraska my dad signed papers on it and didnt have to pay sales tax. Well bout a year ago the dealer called and someone turned him in and he had to back track all the quads he sold in nebraska that out of state customers. I guess its illegal to do it like that and we ended up payin sales tax. About 2 weeks ago when i bought my kfx450 the dealer said that everyone has to pay sales tax on quads in every state the matter what. True? Idk. He said if you bought a ruv and its for farm use that you wouldnt though.

Your dealer is FOS and just didnt want to hassle with the paper work. He told you the RUV thing to try to temp you into spending more money. I would go elsewhere IMO.

Minnesota also has a form which you can sign saying you are using it for agricultural purposes and not have to pay sales tax.  Some dealers don't like to deal with the paperwork and will simply refuse to give you the option or lie and say you can't.  In Minnesota you can also (or at least could a few years ago) write off percentages.  For instance, you could say you will use the ATV 95% of the time for agricultural use, so you only have to pay 5% of the sales tax.
